Rus developer Nikita Aksyonov, also known as Carter54, ported the classic Carmageddon to the browser. This is not about emulation via DOSBox, but rather a native web port of the original game from 1997 that runs directly in modern browsers.
According to the author, published on DTF (dtf.ru),the fan project Dethrace, which focuses on reverse engineering Carmageddon and restoring the engine for modern systems, served as the foundation. Aksyonov points out that Dethrace is about 70% decompiled, but the main gaming functions are already operational, which was sufficient for the browser port.
As a result, in a 'few evenings,' a port was created with support for 60 FPS, an improved render 'for the original 3Dfx,' and more familiar racing controls using the keyboard arrows instead of the old NumPad scheme. You can play through an online demo, and the author has uploaded the source code to GitHub..
According to the repository description, the port utilizes CSHTML5, WebGL 2 və andWeb Audio. It supports single-player mode, menus, racing, opponents, pedestrians, bonuses, replays, saves via IndexedDB, and keyboard and mouse. To run locally, a legal copy of Carmageddon is needed; the original game data is not included in the repository.
