Azad Xadiyev: Salam. Mənim adım Azad Xadiyev. Mən Mail.ru Cloud Solutions-in PaaS yönündə proqramçısıyam.

Eyni zamanda…

Pavel Selivanov: Life hacks. Firstly, from the perspective of clouds, the life hack looks like this: let’s have you give us part of your competencies. We will take them ourselves and deal with them internally. And that’s all good. Except for the fact that it’s important to understand for those who use it… In fact, it’s a wonderful moment… But it’s important to understand that when you give part of your competencies to a cloud or a provider, you receive a standardized solution in return. Roughly speaking, we have a database that performs very specific tasks, and it was very specifically configured. By giving this database to the cloud, we can certainly lay off the admin who previously handled database clusters — the same Amazon or Google will do it for us. But at the same time, Amazon or Google won’t allow us to configure our database precisely. Large projects, big companies — they inevitably come to the point where at some stage of their life, they use cloud solutions, and then they always end up taking their competencies back because more specificity is required.

Azat Khadiyev: Are universal solutions bad, or can we build more on their basis?

Pavel Selivanov: No, universal solutions are definitely not bad. Universal solutions are good. Just universal solutions… are universal. It’s important to understand this. It’s like taking a general script… If around this general script, general application you can build the entire logic of the company’s operations — then that’s cool. But if the logic of operations is different and you take this universal solution, universal script — and start stretching it like an owl on a globe, that’s bad. In universalism itself, there’s nothing wrong.

Azat Khadiyev: If this admin is already working for you, the issue isn't his dismissal. He will simply be able to do more.

Pavel Selivanov: Yes, taking the routine away from him and giving it to someone else to handle elsewhere. This is undoubtedly a good approach. The crucial point here is whether this standard solution fits the specific case.

Azat Khadiyev: Just based on my experience, I see that many companies are doing the same thing. They set up a Kubernetes cluster and think about its scaling. And all these operations are highly repetitive.

Pavel Selivanov: Bəli, şübhəsiz. Həm də, əgər biz konkret olaraq Kubernetes-i alsaq, burada dərin, yaxşı biliklərin bu gün bazarda həqiqətən az olduğu bir məqam var. Kubernetes o qədər böyük bir konstruktordur ki, əgər onu şirkətinizə daxil etsəniz, onunla birlikdə bunu tam zamanlı məşğul olacaq bir mühəndis də gətirməyə hazır olun. Və bu, bahalıdır. Elə mühəndisi tapmaq da çətindir. Özüm haqqında danışanda, bulud həllərini çox sevmirəm, çünki Kubernetes-in necə işlədiyini kifayət qədər yaxşı və dərin anlayıram. Və buludlarda tez-tez istədiyim funksionallıq çatışmadığı üçün, mənə «Xeyr, mümkün deyil» deyirlər. Belə olan halda, üzr istəyirəm, amma mən buluddan daha yaxşısını edə bilərəm. Amma eyni zamanda əgər sizdə tam zamanlı mühəndis yoxdursa, o mühəndisə pul vermək istəmirsinizsə ki, o Kubernetes-i idarə etsin və ona yalnız eksperiment aparması üçün çox pul ödədirsinizsə, bulud sadəcə yaxşı bir həll olur.

Azat Khadiev: Səncə, Kubernetes-in indiki vəziyyəti haqqında nə düşünürsən? Beş il sonra və on ildən sonra onunla nə olacaq?

Pavel Selivanov: Good question. I just know what is happening in our community regarding this. Some people believe that nothing will remain except Kubernetes. The situation that happened a long time ago with Linux applies here. Outside of Linux, there are people who are living on BSD, likely with very specific tasks. There are people working on Windows — Windows servers — who probably also have specific tasks or just have competence in this area and are not ready to leave it. In any case, the standard in our field is Linux. There is an opinion that Kubernetes will become the same de facto standard, and nothing will exist besides Kubernetes. Kubernetes will manage not only applications, their deployment, and scaling, but everything overall. People are already asking: "Can we put a database in Kubernetes?" I usually respond that the question is not about Kubernetes, but about Docker. If you're willing for your database to run in containers, then how it will operate is another matter. I get responses like, "No, no, no, wait. It shouldn't be in containers. It needs to be in Kubernetes. We will attach it to a node. So everything will be as it is now, but Kubernetes will manage all of it." And actually, that’s a good idea. Kubernetes is something that allows someone to enter a company; if a company has Kubernetes and processes built on it, a person who understands it can just take a couple of days to say: "I can fully support you. Completely. I understand how things work here." Unlike approaches without Kubernetes — they just added all sorts of hacks here, and more hacks there. Here’s Ansible, here's Terraform. It’s all been written by someone, and it can take half a year to understand. So, will Kubernetes become the de facto standard? I don’t know. As of today, it looks much more ambitious and confident than the solutions around it.

Azat Khadiev: Well, the comparison with Linux is quite bold. Linux operates on one machine — that’s it. But Kubernetes works across many machines. Immediately, a million variations and reasons arise. Yes, it’s bold. Just taking into account the fact that there are competitors to this paradigm, such as Serverless. Is Kubernetes at risk from such competitors?

Pavel Selivanov: About Serverless… (laughs) Serverless — we still need to understand that server it indeed exists. I recently heard a report on this matter. The speaker mentioned that servers do exist — and that’s the cloud. However, we must always remember that in the cloud — there are servers as well. There are real physical servers set up, in racks, and they are installed somewhere. That’s the cloud. On top of that, Serverless exists, where serverləri üçün mükəmməl seçim edir. «Xeyr». Beləliklə, Serverless Kubernetes-i üstələyəcəkmi?

Azat Xadiyev: Bunu açıqlaya bilərsənmi?

Bəs… Gəlin, biz inkişaf etdirmə mühəndislərini — mühəndis kimi — dəstək bölməsində yerləşdirək və onlar bu problemləri kod istifadə edərək, mühəndisliklə eynilə iş problemlərini həll etdiyi şəkildə həll etsinlər.

Azat Xadiyev: Bu baxımdan… Bu cür mühəndisləri necə müsahibə etmək olar?

Pavel Selivanov: Oh, that's a good question. It's probably beyond what I understand in this life. But I can provide an example. It doesn't relate to the interview. It's about our education system in Russia. In IT, we know that our education system in Russia is very outdated for the IT world; it’s not what it should be. I’m speaking generally about vast Russia — and what’s happening there. Graduates are coming out who are absolutely unprepared to step into web development or a tech company right after graduation. And that’s a problem. We teach them some strange things, even though we should be teaching them to develop for Android, iOS, how to use Git, and all those things. In reality, it seems like we don’t. The university is a time when mostly your parents pay for you. For your whole life. And you can dedicate five years of your life to studying deeply. And exploring all this T-shaped knowledge. When you can study in university what a version control system is, what the different development patterns are, how to test everything, what database types exist, and load balancers. And once you start working, you begin to dive deeper into a specific area. This way, we end up with engineers. And our education system in Russia is much closer to this truth than it seems to us. We receive good mathematical training, solid algorithmic training, and some understanding of programming languages. And regarding the interviews, it seems to me that this is somewhat related. We need to interview engineers. We need the top part of the letter T from T-shaped. Because they will acquire the vertical line of the T.

Azat Khadiev: Yes, interesting. For me, five years after university, my education seemed strange and inadequate. But as I worked on deeper projects and more complex tasks, I realized that no, I was taught very important things. Pavel, thank you. It was very interesting to hear your answers. Let's listen to your report.

Pavel Selivanov: Thank you.
