Kent Overstreet, Bcachefs filesystem developer, proposed an update for inclusion in Linux kernel 6.11 that implements automatic transparent recovery of problematic data in the Bcachefs filesystem, using stored redundant error recovery codes. The logic of the proposed functionality resembles a similar feature in Btrfs: if an input/output error occurs during reading or a checksum mismatch is detected, the problematic data block will be automatically rewritten if redundancy for its recovery is available.
Linus Torvalds postponed the acceptance of this change into kernel 6.11 due to issues with patch formatting (a "git rebase" was performed on the new branch, which should not have been done) and the presence of unanswered questions regarding the changes introduced by the patches in areas outside of fs/bcachefs.
