Problem, stemming from the delivery of the utility «date» from the uutils set, occurred because the option «-r» («—reference=file»), which outputs the last modification time of a specified file, was not implemented. The parser acknowledged the specification of this option in the «date» utility, but the logic to handle the option was absent in the code, hence it always returned the current time instead of the last modification time of the file. <\/p>\n
The «date» command with the option «-r» was used in the daily invoked script «apt.systemd.daily» to determine the modification time of the file «\\\/var\\\/lib\\\/apt\\\/periodic\\\/upgrade-stamp», which was used to calculate the time of the last updates installation. Since the call to «date» with the «-r» option did not produce an error and returned the current time, the script always assumed that the latest updates were installed in the system. <\/p>\n
Notably, in the git repository of uutils, the modification with properly functioning full support for the «-r» option was added a month before the release of Ubuntu 25.10, but it was not included in the package rust-coreutils0.2.2-0ubuntu2, which was part of Ubuntu 25.10. The absence of error output when calling the non-working option prevented the issue from being identified during automated testing.
