OpenWrt podporuje mnoho r\u016fzn\u00fdch platforem a architektur a m\u00e1 syst\u00e9m sestaven\u00ed, kter\u00fd umo\u017e\u0148uje snadnou a pohodlnou kroskompilaci, v\u010detn\u011b za\u0159azen\u00ed r\u016fzn\u00fdch komponent\u016f do sestaven\u00ed, co\u017e usnad\u0148uje vytvo\u0159en\u00ed p\u0159izp\u016fsoben\u00e9ho firmwaru nebo diskov\u00e9ho obrazu s po\u017eadovanou sadou p\u0159edinstalovan\u00fdch bal\u00ed\u010dk\u016f.
