P\u016fvodn\u011b byl ZFS vyvinut spole\u010dnost\u00ed Sun pod n\u00e1zvem Zettabyte File System (pozd\u011bji zkr\u00e1cen na ZFS) a byl dod\u00e1v\u00e1n v opera\u010dn\u00edm syst\u00e9mu Solaris od roku 2005. Po akvizici Sun spole\u010dnost\u00ed Oracle byly zdrojov\u00e9 k\u00f3dy Solaris uzav\u0159eny. Projekt OpenZFS byl zalo\u017een jako fork posledn\u00ed ve\u0159ejn\u011b dostupn\u00e9 verze k\u00f3du od Sun. Od OpenZFS 2.0 byl slou\u010den s v\u00fdvojem ZFS-on-Linux a v sou\u010dasn\u00e9 dob\u011b podporuje opera\u010dn\u00ed syst\u00e9my Linux a FreeBSD.
