Modern data centers are reliable, but any equipment can occasionally fail. In a brief note, we have compiled the most significant incidents of 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n

The impact of digital technology on the economy is growing, the volume of processed information is increasing, new facilities are being constructed, and this is good as long as everything works. Unfortunately, the impact of data center failures on the economy is also growing since businesses began placing critical IT infrastructure in them\u2014this is an inevitable consequence of digitization. We publish a brief selection of the most notable accidents that occurred in various countries last year.<\/p>\n

USA<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

This country is recognized as a leader in data center construction. The USA has the highest number of large commercial and corporate datov\u00fdch center<\/a>, serving global services, so the consequences of incidents there are the most significant. In early March, due to a powerful cyclone, four facilities of the operator Equinix faced power supply failures. The areas were used for Amazon Web Services (AWS) equipment; the accident led to the unavailability of many popular services: GitHub, MongoDB, NewVoiceMedia, Slack, Zillow, Atlassian, Twilio, and Capital One, as well as the Amazon Alexa virtual assistant. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In September, weather anomalies struck Microsoft data centers located in Texas; due to a storm, the power supply system for an entire region was disrupted, and in a data center switched to Diesel Generator Unit power, the cooling unexpectedly shut down. It took several days to resolve the incident, and although this failure was not critical thanks to load balancing, some users worldwide noticed a slowdown in Microsoft's cloud services.<\/p>\n

The most serious accident occurred on August 20 in one of Rostelecom's data centers. Because of it, the servers of the Unified State Register of Real Estate were down for 66 hours, requiring them to be moved to a backup site. The processing of incoming applications through all channels could only be restored by Rosreestr on September 3\u2014the government organization is attempting to recover a substantial sum from Rostelecom for violating the service level agreement. <\/p>\n
