Shepherd u\u017e se uplat\u0148uje v distribuci GuixSD GNU\/Linux a je tak\u00e9 zam\u011b\u0159en na pou\u017eit\u00ed v GNU\/Hurd, ale m\u016f\u017ee pracovat v jak\u00e9mkoli syst\u00e9mu kompatibiln\u00edm s POSIX, pro kter\u00fd je k dispozici jazyk Guile.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd m\u016f\u017ee fungovat jako hlavn\u00ed syst\u00e9m inicializace (init s PID 1) nebo samostatn\u011b pro spr\u00e1vu pozad\u00ed proces\u016f jednotliv\u00fdch u\u017eivatel\u016f (nap\u0159\u00edklad pro spu\u0161t\u011bn\u00ed tor, privoxy, mcron atd.) s prov\u00e1d\u011bn\u00edm s pr\u00e1vy t\u011bchto u\u017eivatel\u016f. Shepherd zaji\u0161\u0165uje spou\u0161t\u011bn\u00ed a zastavov\u00e1n\u00ed slu\u017eeb, p\u0159i\u010dem\u017e bere v \u00favahu vz\u00e1jemn\u00e9 vazby mezi slu\u017ebami, dynamicky ur\u010duje a spou\u0161t\u00ed slu\u017eby, od kter\u00fdch z\u00e1vis\u00ed vybran\u00e1 slu\u017eba.
