Bitwarden's password manager developers have translated the Bitwarden Secrets Manager SDK to the GPLv3 license. The SDK provides a set of wrappers for various programming languages, allowing the creation of extensions for the password manager and the integration of functionality and data models used in Bitwarden products into their programs.
The code for client applications and the server-side was previously open under the GPLv3 and AGPLv3 licenses, but the content of the SDK was distributed under a proprietary license. A few weeks ago, the SDK was included among the build dependencies for the Bitwarden desktop client, which formally classified the client part of the Bitwarden password manager as non-free software since the SDK's license prohibited its use for creating applications used with services other than Bitwarden.
Bitwarden developers took note of the licensing issues and restructured the Bitwarden SDK codebase, resulting in the main SDK components used for building and running the client software being switched to the GPLv3 license and moved to the sdk-internal repository, while the old repository containing the code for creating business products has been renamed to sdk-secrets.
