OpenSUSE distribution developers have implemented the ability to parallelize the loading of packages and metadata in the Zypper package manager. Additionally, a new backend has been introduced that more optimally reuses already established connections and increases the efficiency of metadata processing. When updating 250 packages with a total size of 100 MB, the load time after activating the new backend and parallel mode was reduced from 68.7 seconds to 13.1 seconds, and when updating 407 packages totaling 1 GB — from 281.1 seconds to 119.6 seconds.
Parallelization is available starting from libzypp version 17.36.4 and zypper version 1.14.87, currently only available in the Tumbleweed and Slowroll repositories. By default, these features are still disabled and presented as experimental. To enable parallel loading and the new backend, you can use the environment variables "ZYPP_PCK_PRELOAD=1" and "ZYPP_CURL2=1", while the number of simultaneous connections is regulated using the parameter "download.max_concurrent_connections" in the zypp.conf configuration file.
