Nye natlige builds af Firefox har tilføjet støtte til acceleration af WebRTC via VAAPI.

I nattebuilds Firefox tilføjet hardware acceleration support for video decoding in sessions based on WebRTC technology, used in web applications for video conferencing. Acceleration is implemented using VA-API (Video Acceleration API) and FFmpegDataDecoder, and is available for both Wayland and X11. The implementation for X11 is based on the application of a new backend, using EGL.

To enable acceleration in about:config, set the media.ffmpeg.low-latency.enabled option to true, first aktivere enabling VA-API support ("widget.wayland-dmabuf-vaapi.enabled=true", "gfx.webrender.all=true" or "layers.acceleration.force-enabled=true" and start with the environment variable MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 for Wayland and MOZ_X11_EGL=1 for X11).

Yderligere kan det nævnes inklusion in the Firefox 81 branch of the WebRender compositing system for mobile devices with Adreno 5xx GPUs, except Adreno 505 and 506. WebRender is written in Rust and allows for a significant increase in rendering speed and a decrease in CPU load by offloading rendering operations of page content to the GPU, which are implemented through shaders running in the GPU.
