Microsoft For discussion in the Linux kernel developers' mailing list, a series of patches have been proposed that enable the Hyper-V hypervisor to work with a Linux-based root environment, providing direct access to hardware and used to run guest systems (similar to Dom0 in Xen). Until now, Hyper-V (Microsoft Hypervisor) has only supported Linux within guest environments, with the hypervisor itself managed from a Windows-based environment. Microsoft now intends to create a complete virtualization stack with Linux and Hyper-V.
The organization of the hypervisor's operation in the Linux and Windows kernels differs significantly, which is why a different approach is used in the implementation of Hyper-V for Linux regarding the configuration of subsystems and the organization of hypercalls. The code for interrupt mapping using IOMMU has been restructured similarly to the corresponding Xen support code in Linux (Xen and Hyper-V share and are based on the use of a privileged root / Dom0 environment for management).
The patches include the minimally necessary implementation for operation, which is presented as an initial prototype for discussion and critique. To manage the hypervisor, a device /dev/mshv is proposed, allowing applications from user space to create and run virtual machines. A port of the high-level hypervisor is also proposed , enabling the loading of virtual machines on top of Hyper-V instead of KVM.
In 2018, the number of guest systems running Linux in the Azure cloud service on a Windows-based environment has been steadily declining, largely due to the increasing popularity of Linux-based devops platforms and Kubernetes. Using a unified stack based on Linux could potentially simplify maintenance and improve the performance of Hyper-V servers servicing Linux guest systems.
