I release notes for the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 release (latest update 27.03.2026) it has been noted that the new Ubuntu Desktop, based on Gnome, now requires at least 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of disk space.
The server version 26.04 now requires 1.5 GB of RAM, while 22.04 only required 1 GB, and 18.04 just needed 512 MB.
With the rising costs of RAM and storage, this could increase companies' expenses on Ubuntu-based infrastructure and ultimately impact their users' wallets.
By comparison, Windows 11 requires a minimum of 4 GB of RAM.
The planned release date for Ubuntu 26.04 is April 23, 2026.
