For inclusion in the future kernel 6.17, optimizations and new features are proposed to enhance the performance of Btrfs:
- Experimental support for large memory page folios is introduced. This change is expected to reduce overhead and improve the performance of certain operations. Currently, the feature is technically ready for widespread use but hasn't undergone enough testing to declare it stable.
- Caching requests to bitmap distribution of free space. In tests with the creation of empty files, operation performance improved by 20%. Other performance enhancements have also been noted in high metadata load scenarios.
- Improved pre-reading performance in systems utilizing data compression.
- A denser key layout has been ensured in the XArray structure, enhancing the compactness of extent tree node storage and reducing the number of leaf nodes by 50-70%.
Additionally, changes in ioctl defragmentation and the activation of a previously developed mechanism to prevent file system corruption, limiting writes to the block device with a mounted FS, are noted.
