For a while now, Apple has been offering the new AMD Radeon Pro 5600M mobile graphics card as an exclusive option for the MacBook Pro 16. This card combines the Navi 12 (RDNA) graphics processor with HBM2 memory. To have it installed, you'll need to pay an additional $700 on top of the base price of the laptop. It's quite expensive, but in this case, the buyer gets a true gaming beast.
Previously, the Radeon Pro 5600M showed excellent results in synthetic tests conducted by Max Tech. In Geekbench 5 Metal, its performance was 50% higher than that of the Radeon Pro 5500M. Now it's time for practical gaming tests.
On the MacBook Pro 16, the Windows 10 operating system was installed via Bootcamp, along with basic drivers.
First, Fortnite was launched on the MacBook Pro 16 with an Intel Core i9-9980HK processor (2.4/5.0 GHz), 32 GB of RAM, and the Radeon Pro 5600M, at the native screen resolution of 3072 × 1920 (3K) with automatic graphics settings. Under these conditions, the game's performance was 88 frames per second. At certain moments, the frame rate reached the psychologically significant mark of 100 fps.
When starting the game on the same system but in the Windows 10 environment (via Bootcamp), at the native screen resolution and 'epic' settings, the FPS dropped to 33 frames per second. Lowering the settings to high and the 3D Resolution parameter to 100% increased the average frame count to 50. Further reducing the 3D resolution to 36% (equivalent to 1080p) allowed for achieving 144 frames per second at 'epic' game settings.
The Radeon Pro 5600M performed excellently in the game Call of Duty: Warzone as well. With the resolution scaled down to 60% (1843 × 1152 pixels — more than Full HD), the game ran at a frame rate not lower than 100–140 FPS. This is practically on par with the performance of a full mobile graphics card like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060. It's worth noting that the TDP of the Radeon Pro 5600M is only 50W, compared to 80W for the NVIDIA solution. Increasing the resolution to QuadHD (2427 × 1517 pixels) with maximum graphic settings allowed the Radeon Pro 5600M to maintain an average of 60 frames per second. Even at the native 3K resolution, the maximum FPS reached nearly 70 frames.
