Chrome OS version 122, based on the Linux kernel, upstart system manager, ebuild/portage build tools, open components, and web browser Chrome 122 is now available. The Chrome OS user environment is limited to the web browser, using web applications instead of standard programs; however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop, and taskbar. The source code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. Chrome OS version 122 is available for most current Chromebook models. A version of Chrome OS Flex is offered for use on standard computers.
Key updates in Chrome OS 122:
- A Battery Saver mode has been added, which extends battery life by reducing screen brightness and keyboard backlighting, lowering the screen refresh rate, trimming CPU-intensive tasks, and disabling some background operations. The mode activates automatically when the battery charge drops below 20%.
- The application launcher interface now includes the ability to submit requests in natural language, processed by a machine learning-based engine. For example, you can freely ask for weather forecasts, calculate mathematical expressions, and translate text into another language.
- The ability to edit transcriptions of voice comments for screencasts has been provided. Users can trim screencasts based on sentences, delete or add paragraph separators, mute audio for recording snippets, and assign titles to sections for easier navigation through lengthy recordings.
- Chromebook Plus users are provided with dynamic wallpapers that change depending on the time of day and take into account the selected theme mode (light or dark).
