Kontroldaemonen og v\u00e6rkt\u00f8jerne Shepherd er skrevet i Guile (en af implementeringerne af sproget Scheme), som ogs\u00e5 bruges til at definere indstillinger og opstartparametre for tjenester. Shepherd anvendes allerede i distributionen GuixSD GNU\/Linux og er ogs\u00e5 m\u00e5lrettet til brug i GNU\/Hurd, men kan fungere i enhver POSIX-kompatibel OS, der har Guile tilg\u00e6ngeligt.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd kan bruges b\u00e5de som hovedinit-system (init med PID 1) og i isoleret form til at styre baggrundsprocesser for individuelle brugere (f.eks. til at starte tor, privoxy, mcron osv.) med k\u00f8rsel under de p\u00e5g\u00e6ldende brugeres rettigheder. Shepherd h\u00e5ndterer opstart og stop af tjenester, tager hensyn til tjenesters indbyrdes forhold, og bestemmer og starter dynamisk de tjenester, som den valgte tjeneste er afh\u00e6ngig af.
