Bare for the sake of interest, I decided to tinker with Linux From Scratch in February 2019, thinking it was time to create my own distribution, just in case the Internet actually gets shut down and the existing GNU\/Linux distributions can't install packages without the Internet.<\/p>\n

\nFirst, I built the basic system using the LFS book. Everything ran smoothly, but deciding that a bare Linux console is a sad sight, I started working on Xorg. To install Xorg on the basic system, I needed to install a bunch of packages according to the BLFS book. Manual package installation is fine, but I needed a helper. Thus, the idea of creating a service that would assist in package assembly emerged.<\/p>\n

The essence of the service is as follows: there is a specific website on the LAMP stack that is connected to a database of packages and generates Bash installation scripts instead of HTML pages. The database contains information about packages, dependencies, and patches. <\/p>\n

At first, I used the service to install mc. Surprisingly, the dependencies resolved, and the sources built and installed. Then I tackled Xorg, and its build also ended successfully. But when I tried to build GNOME, I encountered a surprise: a dependency on rust through librsvg. This issue is dedicated to the April post 'A Good Thing Won't Be Called Rusty.'<\/p>\n

Realizing that things were grim with GNOME, I turned to MATE, but it too, as it turned out, depended on librsvg. After MATE, I moved on to LXDE, and to my surprise, everything worked, albeit with some minor issues (poor rendering of control elements and missing icons in windows). <\/p>\n

While trying to resolve the issues with the buttons, I looked into previous versions of librsvg hoping to find a version for GCC. To my surprise, I found that earlier versions of the package were written for GCC. After successfully compiling the previous version of librsvg, I installed the package gnome-icon-theme-symbolic. And the issue with icons in windows was resolved.<\/p>\n

If the problem with the buttons was resolved, then the MATE environment should install as well. And it did. The MATE environment was successfully built and installed.<\/p>\n

I installed programs and games, resulting in a quite functional and even comfortable graphical environment. Of course, there are issues and shortcomings, but for a lone maintainer, it's an excellent result.<\/p>\n
