Den administrerende daemon og v\u00e6rkt\u00f8jerne Shepherd er skrevet i Guile (en af implementeringerne af Scheme-sproget), som ogs\u00e5 bruges til at definere indstillinger og opstart parametre for tjenester. Shepherd anvendes allerede i GuixSD GNU\/Linux distributionen og har ogs\u00e5 til form\u00e5l at blive brugt i GNU\/Hurd, men kan fungere p\u00e5 enhver POSIX-kompatibel OS, hvor Guile er tilg\u00e6ngeligt.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd kan bruges b\u00e5de som hovedinit-system (init med PID 1) og i isoleret form til at styre baggrundsprocesser for individuelle brugere (f.eks. til at starte tor, privoxy, mcron osv.) med k\u00f8rsel under de p\u00e5g\u00e6ldende brugeres rettigheder. Shepherd h\u00e5ndterer opstart og stop af tjenester, tager hensyn til tjenesters indbyrdes forhold, og bestemmer og starter dynamisk de tjenester, som den valgte tjeneste er afh\u00e6ngig af.
