IWD kan bruges b\u00e5de som en selvst\u00e6ndig l\u00f8sning og som backend til netv\u00e6rkskonfiguratorer som Network Manager og ConnMan. Projektet er velegnet til indlejrede enheder og er optimeret til minimalt hukommelses- og diskforbrug. IWD bruger ikke eksterne biblioteker og kun de funktioner, der tilbydes af den underliggende Linux-kerne (det er nok med Linux-kernen og Glibc). Det inkluderer en egen implementering af en DHCP-klient og et s\u00e6t <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/src\/crypto.h\">kryptografiske funktioner<\/a><\/noindex>. Koden til projektet er skrevet i C og <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/\">leveres<\/a><\/noindex> under LGPLv2.1-licensen.<\/p>\n<p>I <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/ChangeLog\">den nye udgivelse<\/a><\/noindex> tilf\u00f8jet st\u00f8tte for teknologi <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wi-Fi_Direct\">Wi-Fi Direct<\/a><\/noindex> (Wi-Fi P2P), som giver mulighed for at oprette en direkte tr\u00e5dl\u00f8s forbindelse mellem enheder uden brug af et adgangspunkt.
