Nach zwei Jahren seit der letzten Ver\u00f6ffentlichung wurde die alternative Version des Linux-Mint-Distributionspakets ver\u00f6ffentlicht \u2014 Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 (LMDE), die auf der Debian-Paketbasis basiert (klassisches Linux Mint wird auf der Ubuntu-Paketbasis erstellt). Die Distribution ist als Installations-ISO-Images (3 GB) mit der Desktop-Umgebung Cinnamon 6.4 verf\u00fcgbar.

LMDE richtet sich an technisch versierte Benutzer und bietet neuere Versionen von Paketen. Ziel der Entwicklung von LMDE ist es, zu testen, ob Linux Mint weiterhin in der bisherigen Form existieren kann, selbst wenn die Entwicklung von Ubuntu eingestellt wird. Dar\u00fcber hinaus hilft LMDE, die vom Projekt entwickelten Anwendungen auf ihre volle Funktionsf\u00e4higkeit in Systemen zu \u00fcberpr\u00fcfen, die sich von Ubuntu unterscheiden. Zur Aktualisierung von der Version LMDE 6 steht das Tool mintupgrade zur Verf\u00fcgung, das einfach aus dem Repository installiert und mit Root-Rechten gestartet werden kann.

Im Lieferumfang von LMDE sind die meisten Verbesserungen der klassischen Version von Linux Mint 22.2 sowie originale Entwicklungen des Projekts (Anwendungsmanager, Update-Installationssystem, Konfiguratoren, Men\u00fcs, Benutzeroberfl\u00e4che, Texteditor Xed, Foto-Manager Pix, Dokumentenleser Xreader, Bildbetrachter Xviewer) enthalten. Die Distribution ist vollst\u00e4ndig kompatibel mit Debian GNU\/Linux 13, jedoch auf Paketebene nicht mit Ubuntu und klassischen Versionen von Linux Mint kompatibel. Die Systemumgebung entspricht dem Paketinhalt von Debian GNU\/Linux 13 (Linux-Kernel 6.12, systemd 257, GCC 14).
