Am 4. Oktober 1999 registrierte Daniel Robbins die Domain gentoo.org und begann mit der Entwicklung einer neuen Distribution. Gemeinsam mit Bob Mutch versuchte er, einige Ideen aus dem FreeBSD-Projekt zu \u00fcbertragen und diese mit der bereits etwa ein Jahr entwickelten Linux-Distribution Enoch zu kombinieren, die Experimente zum Aufbau einer aus Quelltexten zusammengestellten Distribution durchf\u00fchrte, optimiert f\u00fcr bestimmte Hardware. Ein grundlegendes Merkmal von Gentoo ist die Trennung in aus Quelltexten erstellte Ports (Portage) und das minimale Grundsystem, das erforderlich ist, um die Hauptanwendungen der Distribution zu kompilieren. Der erste stabile Gentoo-Release erfolgte nach drei Jahren \u2013 am 31.
