The release of the Pale Moon 29.2 web browser is available, which is forked from the Firefox codebase to ensure improved performance, maintain a classic interface, minimize memory usage, and provide additional customization options. Pale Moon builds are available for Windows and Linux (x86 and x86_64). The project's code is distributed under the MPLv2 (Mozilla Public License).
The project adheres to a classic interface design, avoiding the transition to the Australis interface integrated into Firefox 29, while offering extensive customization capabilities. Notable removed components include DRM, Social API, WebRTC, PDF viewer, Crash Reporter, statistics gathering code, parental control tools, and accessibility features. Compared to Firefox, the browser retains support for XUL technology and maintains the ability to use both full-fledged and lightweight themes. Pale Moon is built on the UXP (Unified XUL Platform), which forks Firefox components from the Mozilla Central repository, free from dependencies on Rust code and excluding Quantum project developments.
In the new version:
- The ability to install Firefox extensions that are not specifically adapted for Pale Moon has been removed. Firefox IDs in extensions are no longer supported.
- A button has been added to the context menu for bookmark sections to open all items in the section at once (‘Open All in Tabs’).
- A prompt has been added to confirm the opening of multiple tabs at once from the side panel with the navigation history.
- Settings for available multimedia formats have been added.
- The media query ‘prefers-color-scheme’ has been implemented, allowing websites to determine the use of a dark theme in the browser and automatically enable dark styling for the viewed site. Unlike other browsers, the color scheme settings are selected based on preferences (Preferences -> Content -> Colors), not the current system theme.
- The User Agent override list for certain sites has been updated.
- The libav1 library implementing the AV1 video encoding format has been updated to version 2.0.
- Code related to the Android platform has been cleaned up.
- The font for emojis has been updated.
- Support for smooth, high-quality, and pixelated parameters has been added to the CSS property image-rendering.
- The method Intl.NumberFormat.formatToParts() has been implemented.
- The setting dom.details_element.enabled has been restored.
