The release candidate for the openSUSE Leap 15.3 distribution, built on the base set of packages from the SUSE Linux Enterprise distribution with some custom applications from the openSUSE Tumbleweed repository, is proposed for testing. A universal DVD image, sized at 4.3 GB (x86_64, aarch64, ppc64les, 390x), is available for download. The release of openSUSE Leap 15.3 is scheduled for June 2, 2021.
Unlike past versions of openSUSE Leap, version 15.3 is not built by rebuilding the source packages of SUSE Linux Enterprise, but uses a unified set of binary packages with SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP 3. It is expected that using the same binary packages in SUSE and openSUSE will simplify migration from one distribution to another, save resources on package building, distribution of updates, and testing, unify differences in spec files, and allow for simpler diagnostics of different package builds when analyzing error messages.
Functional changes in the new release include the update to the Xfce 4.16 desktop environment and LibreOffice 7.1.1 office suite. Minor corrective changes are noted for the Linux kernel 5.3.18, systemd 246, Mesa 20.2.4, KDE Plasma 5.18 LTS, KDE Applications 20.04.2, and GNOME 3.34. New packages for machine learning researchers are provided: TensorFlow Lite 2020.08.23, PyTorch 1.4.0, ONNX 1.6.0, and Grafana 7.3.1. Tools for isolated containers have been updated: Podman 2.1.1-4.28.1, CRI-O 1.17.3, containerd 1.3.9-5.29.3, kubeadm 1.18.4. Development tools include Go 1.15, Perl 5.26.1, PHP 7.4.6, Python 3.6.12, Ruby 2.5, and Rust 1.43.1.
