Valve has released version 6.3-3 of the Proton project, which is based on the developments of the Wine project and aims to enable the launch of games designed for Windows in Linux, available in the Steam catalog. The project developments are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.
In the new version:
- VKD3D-Proton, a fork of vkd3d created by Valve to improve Direct3D 12 support, has been updated to version 2.3.1, which includes initial support for the DXR 1.0 API (DirectX Raytracing), full readiness for VRS (Variable Rate Shading) and Conservative Rasterization, and implements the D3D12_HEAP_FLAG_ALLOW_WRITE_WATCH call, enabling the use of API Traces. Several significant performance optimizations have been made.
- Support has been added for the games The Origin Overlay, Bus and Army General, and Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.
- Issues affecting the games Red Dead Redemption 2 and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition have been resolved.
- Problems in the launchers of Evil Genius 2, Zombie Army 4, Strange Brigade, Sniper Elite 4, Beam.NG, and Eve Online have been fixed.
- Issues with recognizing Xbox controllers in Far Cry Primal have been resolved.
- The ability to adjust brightness and color in older games like Deus Ex has been added.
