Release of the Qt 6.1 framework

The Qt Company has released version 6.1 of the Qt framework, continuing the work on stabilizing and enhancing the functionality of the Qt 6 branch. Qt 6.1 supports the following platforms: Windows 10, macOS 10.14+, Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+, CentOS 8.1+, OpenSuSE 15.1+), iOS 13+, and Android (API 23+). The source code of Qt components is provided under LGPLv3 and GPLv2 licenses.

The key improvements in Qt 6.1 primarily concern the inclusion of modules that were available in Qt 5.15 but were not ready for inclusion in the first release of Qt 6. Specifically, the following modules have been included:

  • Active Qt — support for COM and ActiveX controls on the Windows platform.
  • Qt Charts — for creating charts.
  • Qt Data Visualization — for visualizing static and dynamic data.
  • Qt Device Utilities — part of the Qt for Device Creation package.
  • Qt Graphical Effect — a layer for simplifying the porting of applications to Qt 6.
  • Qt Lottie — renders graphics and animations exported in JSON format using the Bodymovin plugin for Adobe After Effects. It includes a built-in micro-engine for executing animations, cropping, layer processing, and other effects.
  • Qt State Machine — a framework for creating event-driven constructs and implementing finite automata based on SCXML.
  • Qt Virtual Keyboard — the implementation of a virtual keyboard.

Modules that have not yet been transferred are expected in the LTS release of Qt 6.2, scheduled for September.

  • Qt Bluetooth
  • Qt Multimedia
  • Qt NFC
  • Qt Positioning
  • Qt Quick Dialogs: Folder, Message Box
  • Qt Remote Objects
  • Qt Sensors
  • Qt SerialBus
  • Qt SerialPort
  • Qt WebChannel
  • Qt WebEngine
  • Qt WebSockets
  • Qt WebView

Changes in Qt 6.1:

  • In Qt Core, improvements have been made for usability and simplification of the API. Methods removeIf() have been added, and the number of classes supporting the erase_if() method has been expanded. Methods available in QString but missing from QStringView have been implemented. Overflow-safe functions for addition, subtraction, and multiplication have been added. Support for 16-bit floating-point values has been enhanced. The property binding API introduced in Qt 6.0 has been updated. New classes for easier integration with Java, QJniEnvironment, and QJniObject, commonly needed on the Android platform, have been added.
  • In Qt Gui, support for the Vulkan 1.1 and 1.2 graphics APIs has been improved. A new class QUrlResourceProvider has been added, which is used in QLabel, eliminating the need to re-implement loadResource() and create subclasses of QTextDocument. The ability to apply user-defined color space component correction functions within the QColorSpace class has been implemented.
  • The Qt Network module offers the QNetworkInformation class, which allows you to determine the network state in the system. The HTTP Cookie handler has been updated to support the SameSite mode.
  • In Qt QML, the options QJSPrimitiveValue and QJSManagedValue have been implemented for more refined control over JavaScript execution.
  • Qt Quick 3D has added support for morphing target animations and implemented experimental support for instanced rendering, allowing multiple copies of similar objects to be rendered in one pass, placed in peripheral areas of the scene. This method significantly speeds up rendering when the scene contains many similar objects. Based on this method, support has been added for rendering three-dimensional particles.
