The Live distribution NomadBSD 130R-20210508 is now available. It features a version of FreeBSD optimized for use as a portable desktop, bootable from a USB drive. The graphical environment is based on the Openbox window manager. DSBMD is used for mounting drives (supporting mounting of CD9660, FAT, HFS+, NTFS, Ext2/3/4). The size of the boot image is 2.4 GB (x86_64).
In the new release, the base environment has been updated to FreeBSD 13.0. A new version numbering scheme has been proposed, following the FFfX-YYYYMMDD format, where 'FFf' reflects the version number of FreeBSD, 'X' indicates the release type (ALPHA — A, BETA — B, RELEASE — R), and YYYYMMDD includes the build date. This new scheme will allow generating images based on different FreeBSD versions and will make it easy to see when the release was prepared and which version of FreeBSD it is based on. Additionally, the alignment of disk partitions has been changed to a 1M boundary to improve writing performance on flash drives. The issue with GLX shutdown has been resolved. Drivers for VMware have been added.
