After nearly a year of development, the release of the openSUSE Leap 15.3 distribution has taken place. The release is based on the core package set of the SUSE Linux Enterprise distribution, including some user applications from the openSUSE Tumbleweed repository. A universal DVD image, sized at 4.4 GB (x86_64, aarch64, ppc64les, 390x), a minimal installation image for network package downloads (146 MB), and Live images with KDE, GNOME, and Xfce are available for download.
A key feature of openSUSE Leap 15.3 is the use of a unified set of binary packages with SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP 3, instead of the previous practice of rebuilding src packages from SUSE Linux Enterprise for past releases. It is expected that using the same binary packages in both SUSE and openSUSE will simplify migration between the two distributions, conserve resources for package building, updates distribution, and testing, unify the differences in spec files, and allow for easier troubleshooting across various package builds when analyzing error messages.
Other innovations:
- Certain components of the distribution have been updated. The core Linux kernel, based on version 5.3.18, is included as in the previous release. The system manager systemd has been updated to version 246 (previously version 234), while the package manager DNF has been updated to version 4.7.0 (was 4.2.19).
- User environments Xfce 4.16, LXQt 0.16, and Cinnamon 4.6 have been updated. As in the previous release, KDE Plasma 5.18, GNOME 3.34, Sway 1.4, MATE 1.24, Wayland 1.18, and X.org Server 1.20.3 are still available. The Mesa package has been updated from release 19.3 to 20.2.4 with support for OpenGL 4.6 and Vulkan 1.2. New releases of LibreOffice 7.1.1, Blender 2.92, VLC 3.0.11.1, mpv 0.32, Firefox 78.7.1, and Chromium 89 have been offered. Packages with KDE 4 and Qt 4 have been removed from the repositories.
- New packages for researchers working in machine learning have been provided: TensorFlow Lite 2020.08.23, PyTorch 1.4.0, ONNX 1.6.0, Grafana 7.3.1.
- Tools for isolated containers have been updated: Podman 2.1.1-4.28.1, CRI-O 1.17.3, containerd 1.3.9-5.29.3, kubeadm 1.18.4.
- For developers, Go 1.15, Perl 5.26.1, PHP 7.4.6, Python 3.6.12, Ruby 2.5, and Rust 1.43.1 are recommended.
- Due to licensing issues, the Berkeley DB library has been removed from the apr-util, cyrus-sasl, iproute2, perl, php7, postfix, and rpm packages. The Berkeley DB 6 branch has been transitioned to AGPLv3, the requirements of which also apply to applications using BerkeleyDB in library form. For example, RPM is distributed under GPLv2, and AGPL is incompatible with GPLv2.
- Support for IBM Z and LinuxONE (s390x) systems has been added.
