In Ubuntu 21.10, the discontinuation of the theme combining dark headers, a light background, and light controls has been approved. Users will be offered a fully light version of the Yaru theme by default, as well as the option to switch to a completely dark version (dark headers, dark background, and dark controls).
The decision is explained by the lack of capability in GTK3 and GTK4 to define different background and text colors for the header and main window, which does not guarantee the correct operation of all GTK applications when using combined themes (for example, the GNOME disk analyzer shows a white input area with a dark header). Another reason is the excessive labor costs involved in maintaining non-standard themes. The issue is that GNOME does not provide an official API and set of recommendations for GTK themes, leading to compatibility issues with third-party themes in each new GNOME release.
Among other changes expected in Ubuntu 21.10, the abandonment of the eggplant color for the background of switches and widgets is noted (a replacement color has yet to be confirmed).
