Red Hat developers have started forming builds of CentOS Stream 9, a continuously updated edition of CentOS, which serves as the basis for the development of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. CentOS Stream allows earlier access to the features of the upcoming RHEL branch, but includes packages that are not yet fully stabilized. Builds of CentOS Stream 9 are created for the x86_64, Aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x architectures, but currently only in the form of images for isolated containers.
CentOS Stream is designed to enable community stakeholders to participate in the development of the new RHEL branch. CentOS Stream can be viewed as an upstream project for RHEL, serving as the foundation for its development. External contributors can oversee the preparation of packages for RHEL, propose their changes, and influence decision-making. Previously, a snapshot of one of the Fedora releases was used as the basis for a new RHEL branch, which was refined and stabilized behind closed doors, without the possibility of monitoring the development process and decisions made. The new development process involves moving the previously closed stage of RHEL preparation to CentOS Stream — based on a snapshot of Fedora, a new branch of CentOS Stream is formed with community participation, after which RHEL will be rebuilt based on CentOS Stream.
