The release of the specialized distribution Tails 4.20 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), based on the Debian package base and designed to ensure anonymous internet access, has been published. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor system. By default, all connections except traffic through the Tor network are blocked by a packet filter. For storing user data in persistent mode between sessions, encryption is used. An ISO image has been prepared for download, capable of running in Live mode, with a size of 1 GB.
In the new version, the process of connecting to the Tor network has been completely revamped. After establishing a connection with the local network, a Tor connection wizard now launches, allowing users to choose between an automatic connection mode and a privacy-enhanced mode that conceals the fact that Tor is being used from local network traffic analyzers. The connection wizard offers the option to connect from censored networks through bridge gateways to bypass blocks without changing the default configuration. In the future, there will be an option to save the list of bridge gateways in persistent storage, diagnose wireless network functionality, determine connections using captive portals, and obtain information about new bridge gateways.
Among other changes in Tails 4.20, the file sharing application OnionShare has been updated to version 2.2, with the ability to use OnionShare as web server a service for serving static pages. Additionally, updated versions of the password manager KeePassXC 2.6.2, Tor Browser 10.5.2, the email client Thunderbird 78.11.0, Tor 0.4.5.9, and the Linux kernel 5.10.46 have been released.
