After eight months of development, the release of the console file manager Midnight Commander 4.8.27 is now available, distributed in source code under the GPLv3+ license.
List of major changes:
- The 'Find File' dialog now includes the option to follow symbolic links ('Follow symlinks').
- The minimum required versions of components for building have been raised: Autoconf 2.64, Automake 1.12, Gettext 0.18.2, and libssh2 1.2.8.
- Build time has been significantly reduced after changing the version.
- A separate configuration file ~/.local/share/mc/.zshrc has been added for zsh.
- The widget system has been redesigned, implementing the WST_VISIBLE state for showing and hiding widgets.
- The VFS module extfs has added support for unrar 6 and official 7z builds.
- The file list parser from the lftp project has been transferred to ftpfs.
- The built-in editor now features syntax highlighting for Verilog and SystemVerilog header files, openrc-run scripts, and JSON format. Syntax highlighting scripts for Python have been updated.
- Panels now provide syntax highlighting for c++ and h++ files as source texts, and JSON files as documents.
- Support for terminal emulators alacritty and foot has been added.
- Support for fb2 eBook format has been added to mc.ext.
- The mediainfo utility has been utilized in ext.d to output information about various multimedia files.
- A vulnerability CVE-2021-36370 in the SFTP-supporting VFS module, related to the lack of host key fingerprint verification, has been fixed.
