After two months of development, the release of the distributed version control system Git 2.33 has been published. Git is one of the most popular, reliable, and high-performance version control systems, providing flexible tools for non-linear development based on branching and merging. To ensure the integrity of the history and resistance to 'backdating' changes, implicit hashing of the entire previous history in each commit is utilized, and digital signatures can also authenticate individual tags and commits by developers.
Compared to the previous release, the new version accepts 649 changes, prepared with the participation of 74 developers, 19 of whom contributed for the first time. Key innovations include:
- The 'git send-email' command has been enhanced with the '--sendmail-cmd' option and the 'sendemail.sendmailCmd' configuration, allowing users to specify the command for interacting with the SMTP server when sending emails.
- For the 'git rev-list' command, the '--no-commit-header' option has been implemented, which suppresses the display of the 'commit ' header, simplifying the output usage in scripts.
- The userdiff template has been updated to support the 'record' token for the C# language.
- The 'git worktree add --lock' command has introduced the ability to output the reason for locking the worktree.
- In the output generated using the 'git log --decorate' option, which shows not only the regular log data but also the associated branch names, a definition and loading of only the requested data have been added to avoid unnecessary work.
- An optimization has been added that allows faster execution of operations on the side server by skipping already viewed commits for trees.
- The backend supporting the 'diff -G/-S' command has been transitioned to use the pcre2 regular expression engine, if available.
- The 'git send-email' command has been optimized.
- Work on implementing 'git submodule' in the C language has continued.
