After a year and a half of development, the release of the MATE 1.26 desktop environment has been published. This release continues the development of the GNOME 2.32 codebase while maintaining the classic concept of desktop layout. Installation packages for MATE 1.26 will soon be prepared for Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, ALT, and other distributions.
In the new release:
- The porting of MATE applications for Wayland has continued. Adaptations have been made for running without X11 in the Wayland environment, including the document viewer Atril, System Monitor, text editor Pluma, terminal emulator Terminal, and other desktop components.
- The capabilities of the Pluma text editor have been significantly expanded. A mini-map overview has been added, allowing users to encompass the entire content of the document at a glance. A background grid template has been proposed to simplify the use of Pluma as a notebook. The content sorting plugin now allows for change rollbacks. A key combination 'Ctrl + Y' has been added to toggle line number display. The settings dialog has been revamped.
- A new plugin system has been added to the text editor, enabling Pluma to be transformed into a comprehensive integrated development environment with features such as automatic bracket closing, code block commenting, input autocompletion, and a built-in terminal.
- In the Control Center, additional options have been implemented in the window settings section. The screen settings dialog now includes an option for managing screen scaling.
- In the notification output system, the ability to insert hyperlinks into messages has been introduced. Support for a 'Do Not Disturb' applet has been added, temporarily disabling notification outputs.
- In the window list applet, an option has been added to disable mouse scrolling, and the clarity of window thumbnails has been improved, which are now rendered as Cairo surfaces.
- In the Netspeed traffic indicator, the default information provided has been expanded, and support for netlink has been added.
- The calculator has been updated to use the GNU MPFR/MPC library, providing more accurate and faster calculations, as well as additional functions. The ability to view calculation history and resize the window has been added. The speed of integer factorization and exponentiation modulo has been significantly increased.
- The calculator and terminal emulator have been adapted for use with the Meson build system.
- A new bookmarks sidebar has been added to the Caja file manager. The context menu now includes a disk formatting option. Through the Caja Actions extension, you can add buttons to the context menu shown on the desktop for launching any programs.
- The Atril document viewer has significantly accelerated scrolling through large documents by replacing linear search operations with binary tree searches. Memory consumption has been reduced, as the EvWebView browser component now loads only when necessary.
- The Marco window manager has improved the reliability of restoring the position of minimized windows.
- The Engrampa archive manager has added support for additional formats EPUB and ARC, as well as the ability to open encrypted RAR archives.
- The Power Manager has been updated to use the libsecret library. An option to turn off the keyboard backlight has been added.
- The 'About' dialogs have been updated.
- Accumulated bugs and memory leaks have been fixed. The codebase of all components related to the desktop has been modernized.
- A new wiki site has been launched with information for new developers.
- Translation files have been updated.
