HashiCorp explained the reason for the recent addition to the repository of the open configuration management platform Terraform, a note regarding the temporary suspension of reviews and acceptance of pull requests submitted by community members. The note was perceived by some participants as a crisis in the open development model of Terraform.
Terraform developers rushed to reassure the community, stating that the added note was misunderstood and was only added to clarify the decrease in activity regarding changes from the community due to staff shortages. It is noted that following the release of Terraform 1.0 this summer, there has been a surge in the platform's popularity, which HashiCorp was not prepared for.
Due to the growing popularity of the platform and an increase in the number of commercial clients, the company is experiencing a significant staffing shortage, and the existing personnel have been redistributed to address primary tasks and ensure product support. The suspension of community change acceptance is described as a forced temporary measure—the rise in popularity has led to an increase in the number of changes submitted by the community that the existing HashiCorp staff cannot review in time. Changes for other HashiCorp products, as well as for providers implementing additional resource types for Terraform, continue without interruption.
Currently, there is an intensified process in place to recruit new engineers, and staffing issues are expected to be resolved in a few weeks, after which the acceptance of pull requests from the community will resume. HashiCorp currently has more than a hundred open engineering positions listed.
