The release of GDB 11.1 has been announced (the first release of the 11.x series, with branch 11.0 used for development). GDB supports debugging at the source code level for a wide range of programming languages (Ada, C, C++, Objective-C, Pascal, Go, Rust, etc.) on various hardware (i386, amd64, ARM, Power, Sparc, RISC-V, etc.) and software platforms (GNU/Linux, *BSD, Unix, Windows, macOS).
Key Improvements:
- The TUI (Text User Interface) has added support for mouse actions and the ability to scroll content with the mouse wheel. The passthrough of key combinations not processed in TUI to GDB is now provided.
- Support for the ARMv8.5 MTE (MemTag, Memory Tagging Extension) mechanism has been added, allowing tags to be attached to each memory allocation operation and ensuring that pointer access is checked against a valid tag. The remote debugging protocol supports the 'qMemTags' and 'QMemTags' packets for binding tags to memory.
- The logic for reading configuration files has been changed. The .gdbinit file is now checked in the following order: $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gdb/gdbinit, $HOME/.config/gdb/gdbinit, and $HOME/.gdbinit. That is, first in the config subdirectory, and then in the home directory.
- In the command 'break […] if CONDITION', the error message for invalid conditions in certain places has been eliminated if the condition is valid in at least one case.
- Support has been added for debugging core dumps generated for Cygwin programs compiled for the x86_64 architecture.
- Support for fixed-point types has been added, as well as the constants DW_AT_GNU_numerator and DW_AT_GNU_denominator.
- A new 'startup-quietly on|off' setting has been added; when 'on', it operates similarly to the '-silent' option.
- In the 'ptype' command, options '/x' and '/d' have been implemented to specify hexadecimal or decimal counting when outputting sizes and offsets. A 'print type hex on|off' setting has been added for using hexadecimal values in the output of the 'ptype' command.
- In the 'inferior' command, when invoked without arguments, the current debug object (inferior) is displayed.
- The output of the 'info source' command has been redesigned.
- The command 'style version foreground | background | intensity' has been added to control the style of version numbering.
- New command-line options have been added: '--early-init-command' ('-eix'), '--early-init-eval-command' ('-eiex'), '--qualified' (for the '-break-insert' and '-dprintf-insert' commands), '--force-condition' (for the '-break-insert' and '-dprintf-insert' commands), and '--force' (for the '-break-condition' command).
- In the ‘-file-list-exec-source-files’ team, specifying regular expressions for filtering processed source files is allowed. A ‘debug-fully-read’ field has been added to the output to inform about the degree of debug information loaded.
- Improvements have been made to the Python API. New methods gdb.Frame.level() and db.PendingFrame.level() have been added to return the stack level for the Frame object. When a catchpoint is triggered in the Python API, gdb.BreakpointEvent is now passed instead of gdb.StopEvent. Settings ‘python ignore-environment on|off’ have been added to ignore environment variables and ‘python dont-write-bytecode auto|on|off’ to disable bytecode writing.
- Improvements have been made to the Guile API. New procedures value-reference-value, value-rvalue-reference-value, and value-const-value have been added.
- The GMP (GNU Multiple Precision Arithmetic) library has been included as a mandatory build dependency.
- Support for the ARM Symbian platform (arm*-*-symbianelf*) has been discontinued.
