The release of IPFire 2.27 Core 160, a distribution for creating routers and firewalls, has been published. IPFire features a simple installation process and an intuitive web interface that is rich in visual graphs. The size of the installation ISO image is 406 MB (x86_64, i586, ARM, AArch64).
The system is modular; in addition to basic packet filtering and traffic management functions, modules are available for IPFire that implement an attack prevention system based on Suricata, as well as for creating file servers server (Samba, FTP, NFS), mail servers (Cyrus-IMAPd, Postfix, Spamassassin, ClamAV, and Openmailadmin), and print servers (CUPS), organizing a VoIP gateway based on Asterisk and Teamspeak, creating a wireless access point, and setting up an audio and video streaming server (MPFire, Videolan, Icecast, Gnump3d, VDR). A special package manager called Pakfire is used to install add-ons in IPFire.
In the new release:
- Preparation has been made for the removal of Python 2 support in the next IPFire release. The distribution is no longer tied to Python 2, but this branch continues to be used by some custom scripts.
- To reduce latency and increase throughput during intensive traffic processing, the network subsystem has been enhanced with the attachment of packet handlers, network interfaces, and queues to individual CPU cores, reducing migration between different CPU cores and improving the efficiency of cache usage.
- Support for service redirection has been added to the firewall engine.
- Graphs have been switched to use the SVG format.
- Web proxy functionality has been enabled on systems without an internal network.
- The logs now display protocol names instead of numbers.
- The base package includes updated versions of cURL 7.78.0, ddns 014, e2fsprogs 1.46.3, ethtool 5.13, iproute2 5.13.0, less 590, libloc 0.9.7, libhtp 5.0.38, libidn 1.38, libssh 0.9.6, OpenSSH 8.7p1, openssl 1.1.1k, pcre 8.45, poppler 21.07.0, sqlite3 3.36, sudo 1.9.7p2, strongswan 5.9.3, suricata 5.0.7, sysstat 12.5.4, sysfsutils 2.1.1.
