On the twentieth anniversary of the project, the release of the free cross-platform interpreter for classic quests ScummVM 2.5.0 was announced, which replaces executable files for games and enables running many classic games on platforms for which they were not originally intended. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
A total of over 250 quests and more than 1600 interactive text games can be launched, including titles from companies such as LucasArts, Humongous Entertainment, Revolution Software, Cyan, and Sierra, such as Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Myst, Blade Runner, King’s Quest 1-7, Space Quest 1-6, Discworld, Simon the Sorcerer, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, and The Legend of Kyrandia. Games are supported on platforms including Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, PS Vita, Switch, Dreamcast, AmigaOS, Atari/FreeMiNT, RISC OS, Haiku, PSP, PS3, Maemo, GCW Zero, and others.
In the new version:
- The graphical interface of ScummVM has been significantly redesigned, adapted for high pixel density screens (HiDPI), and reworked for output using characters in Unicode encoding.
- The port for the Nintendo DS gaming console has been completely rewritten.
- Support for pseudo-3D games (2.5D) has been added, realized through the integration of the 3D game interpreter ResidualVM.
- Support has been added for the games Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, and Myst 3: Exile, as well as the following titles:

- Red Comrades 1: Save the Galaxy
- Red Comrades 2: For the Great Justice
- Transylvania
- Crimson Crown
- OO-Topos
- Glulx interactive fiction games

- Russian translations have been added for the games Bargon Attack, Woodruff, Leisure Suit Larry 6/7, Longbow, Torin’s Passage, Space Quest 5.
- Support for input using the Russian language has been added to the AGI and Xeen game engines.
- For a large number of games, Wintermute integration with GOG and Steam services has been implemented.
- The number of games for which KeyMapper can be used has been expanded.
- Text-to-Speech support has been added to the games Sfinx, Soltys, and The Griffon Legend.
- Options for enabling and disabling integration with Discord RPC have been added.
- A "--window-size" parameter has been added for selecting the window size at launch (only works when rendering via OpenGL).
