Valve has released VKD3D-Proton 2.5, a branch from the vkd3d codebase, aimed at enhancing Direct3D 12 support in the Proton gaming launcher. VKD3D-Proton includes Proton-specific changes, optimizations, and improvements for better performance of Windows games based on Direct3D 12, which have not yet been integrated into the main vkd3d repository. Notably, there's a focus on the use of modern Vulkan extensions and the capabilities of recent graphics driver releases to achieve full compatibility with Direct3D 12.
In the new version:
- More or less complete support for the DXR 1.0 API (DirectX Raytracing) has been implemented, alongside experimental support for DXR 1.1 (enabled by setting the environment variable VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr|dxr11). While not all functions are implemented in DXR 1.1 yet, inline ray tracing support is fully operational. Games utilizing DXR include Control, DEATHLOOP, Cyberpunk 2077, World of Warcraft, and Resident Evil: Village.
- Support for NVIDIA's DLSS technology has been added for systems with NVIDIA graphics cards, allowing the use of Tensor cores for realistic image scaling through machine learning methods to increase resolution without quality loss.
- The translator for DXIL (DirectX Intermediate Language) intermediate representation has been expanded to support shader model features.
- Support for the PCI-e Resizable BAR (Base Address Registers) technology has been added, allowing the CPU to access the entire GPU memory, which can increase GPU performance by 10-15% in certain situations. The optimization effects are notably evident in games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding.
- Issues have been resolved in the following games: DEATHLOOP, F1 2021, WRC 10, DIRT 5, Diablo II Resurrected, Psychonauts 2, Far Cry 6, Evil Genius 2: World Domination, Hitman 3, Anno 1800, as well as in games based on the Unreal Engine 4.
