The release of Redcore Linux 2102 is now available, which aims to combine the functionalities of Gentoo with user-friendliness. The distribution offers a simple installer that allows for quick deployment of a working system without the need to rebuild components from source. Users are provided with a repository of ready-to-use binary packages, supported by a continuous updating cycle (rolling model). A proprietary package manager, sisyphus, is employed for package management. An ISO image featuring the KDE desktop is available for installation, with a size of 3.9 GB (x86_64).
In the new version:
- The synchronization with the Gentoo testing tree has been completed as of October 1.
- For installation, packages are offered with Linux kernel versions 5.14.10 (default), 5.10.71, and 5.4.151.
- The versions of around 1300 packages have been updated.
- The user environment has been updated to KDE Plasma 5.22.5 and KDE Gear 21.08.1.
- The DDX component Xwayland, used to run X11 applications in Wayland-based environments, has been moved to a separate package.
- Chromium is set as the default browser (previously Firefox was included, and Mailspring is now the email client instead of Thunderbird).
- Support for proprietary NVIDIA drivers has been improved, and the PRIME technology support for offloading rendering tasks to other GPUs (PRIME Display Offload) is provided through nvidia-prime.
- Stability during live mode booting has been enhanced.
- The installer has been updated.
- Functionality of the Steam runtime has been ensured.
