Company representatives have apologized to the community and acknowledged that they made a mistake by removing the already added code and not responding immediately to the community's dissatisfaction. It was also stated that the company continues to position .NET as an open platform and will continue to develop it according to an open development model.
It is explained that due to a lack of resources and time before the release of .NET 6, it was decided to offer Hot Reload only in Visual Studio 2022. However, the main mistake was that instead of simply deactivating the already added code in the open codebase, this code was removed from the repository. The mention of resource shortages for completing Hot Reload for the final release of .NET 6 raises questions, as this feature was already included in the final textual releases of .NET 6 RC1 and .NET 6 RC2, and was tested by users. Development in Visual Studio 2022 also does not provide additional time for refinement, as the releases of Visual Studio 2022 and .NET 6 are scheduled for the same day - November 8.
Initially, it was assumed that leaving Hot Reload only in the commercial product Visual Studio 2022 was aimed at enhancing its competitive attractiveness compared to free development tools. According to The Verge, the removal of Hot Reload code was a management decision made by Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft's product development division.
It is worth noting that the Hot Reload feature provides means for code editing on the fly during program execution, allowing changes to be made without manually stopping the execution and without attaching breakpoints. The developer could run the application under 'dotnet watch', after which code changes were automatically applied to the running application, allowing immediate observation of the result.
