X.Org Server 21.1 is now available.

Three and a half years after the last significant release, the X.Org Server 21.1 has been formed. Starting with this release branch, a new version numbering scheme has been introduced that allows you to immediately see how long ago a particular version was published. Similar to the Mesa project, the first number of the version reflects the year, the second number indicates the sequential number of significant releases for that year, and the third number is used for marking corrective updates.

Key Changes:

  • Full support for the Meson build system has been provided. The ability to build using autotools is still retained but will be removed in future releases.
  • Support for the 2D acceleration architecture Glamor, which uses OpenGL for all rendering operations, has been added to the X server Xvfb (X virtual framebuffer). The X server Xvfb outputs to a buffer (emulates a framebuffer using virtual memory) and is capable of operating on systems without a screen and input devices.
  • The modesetting DDX driver has implemented support for the VRR (Variable Rate Refresh) mechanism, which allows adaptive changes to the monitor's refresh rate to ensure smoothness and prevent tearing during gaming. The modesetting driver is not tied to specific types of video chips and essentially resembles the VESA driver, but operates on top of the KMS interface, meaning it can be used on any hardware that has a functioning kernel-level DRM/KMS driver.
  • Support for the XInput 2.4 input system has been added, which introduces the ability to use control gestures on touchpads.
  • The implementation of the DMX (Distributed Multihead X) mode, which allowed multiple X servers to be combined into one virtual screen using Xinerama, has been removed. Support was discontinued due to the lack of demand for the technology and issues with using OpenGL.
  • Improvements have been made to DPI detection, providing accurate information about the display's resolution. This change may affect the rendering of applications that use their own mechanisms for working with high-density pixel screens (hi-DPI).
  • The XWayland DDX component, which enables the X.Org Server to run X11 applications in Wayland-based environments, is now released as a separate package with its own development cycle, independent of releases. server X.Org.
