Oracle has announced the release of Oracle Linux 8.5, based on the package base of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.5. An unrestricted installation ISO image, sized at 8.6 GB, is available for download, prepared for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) architectures. Oracle Linux offers unlimited and free access to the yum repository with binary package updates including bug fixes (errata) and security issues. Additionally, separately supported Application Stream modules have also been prepared for download.
In addition to the kernel package from RHEL (based on kernel 4.18), Oracle Linux offers its own Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 6, derived from Linux kernel 5.4 and optimized for working with Oracle's industrial software and hardware. The source code for the kernel, including individual patch breakdowns, is available in Oracle's public Git repository. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is installed by default, positioned as an alternative to the standard RHEL kernel package and provides several advanced features, such as DTrace integration and enhanced Btrfs support.
The new version introduces the release of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel R6U3, while the functionality of Oracle Linux 8.5 and RHEL 8.5 remains fully identical (the change log for Oracle Linux 8.5 is a repeat of the change log for RHEL 8.5).
