Patrick Volkerding has announced the start of testing for the second release candidate of the Slackware 15.0 distribution. The proposed release is suggested by Patrick to be considered in a more advanced state of freeze, devoid of errors when attempting to rebuild from the source code. A 3.3 GB installation image (x86_64) is prepared for download, along with a minimal version for running in Live mode.
Compared to the previous test release, the Samba build has been fixed by rebuilding the package python-markdown-3.3.4-x86_64-3.txz. As Patrick explains, newer versions of Markdown require mportlib_metadata and zipp, and adding them also corrects the build. However, strangely, the installed PKG-INFO shows version 0.0.0, and there's a suspicion that the issue may stem from setuptools. After attempting to rebuild all other Python modules to check for any more general error, only two Python modules were found to exhibit this problem, and other similar reports of the issue have been identified (but without fixes). Markdown-3.3.4 seems to be a safe choice.
Additionally, the package python-documenttils-0.17.1-x86_64-3.txz has been rebuilt, and the packages qpdf-10.4.0-x86_64-1.txz and bind-9.16.23-x86_64-1.txz have been updated. In libdrm, a rollback to version 2.4.107 has occurred, as version 2.4.108 seems to be not fully compatible with xorg-server-1.20.13, and this also fixes the inability to build xf86-video-vmware from source. Overall, the Slackware 15 branch is noteworthy for updates in software versions, including an upgrade to the Linux kernel 5.13, compiling with GCC 11.2, and using the Glibc 2.33 system library. Desktop components have been updated to KDE Plasma 5.23 and KDE Gear 21.08.2.
