The UBports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform after Canonical stepped aside, has released the OTA-20 (over-the-air) firmware update. The project is also developing an experimental port of the Unity 8 desktop, which has been renamed to Lomiri.
The Ubuntu Touch OTA-20 update is tailored for the BQ E4.5/E5/M10/U Plus, Cosmo Communicator, F(x)tec Pro1, Fairphone 2/3, Google Pixel 2XL/3a, Huawei Nexus 6P, LG Nexus 4/5, Meizu MX4/Pro 5, Nexus 7 2013, OnePlus 2/3/5/6/One, Samsung Galaxy Note 4/S3 Neo+, Sony Xperia X/XZ/Z4, Vollaphone, Xiaomi Mi A2/A3, Xiaomi Poco F1, Xiaomi Redmi 3s/3x/3sp/4X/7, and Xiaomi Redmi Note 7/7 Pro smartphones. Compared to the previous release, support has been added for Xiaomi Redmi 9, 9 Prime, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro Max, and 9S smartphones. Updates for the Pine64 PinePhone and PineTab devices will be prepared separately, without the 'OTA-20' label.
Ubuntu Touch OTA-20 is still based on Ubuntu 16.04, but recently the developers have focused their efforts on transitioning to Ubuntu 20.04. Notable changes in OTA-20 include the ability for LED and vibration indications for incoming notifications on devices supported by the Halium 9 layer, which provides a low-level layer to simplify hardware support. Custom sounds for notifications can now be assigned. Support has been added for the Xiaomi Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9, and Poco M2 Pro device lines, as well as limited support for the Google Pixel 2, which still has unresolved battery consumption issues.
