After more than a year of development, the release of the updated distribution for mobile phones, NemoMobile version 0.7, has taken place. It utilizes the developments from the Mer project but is based on the ManjaroArm project. The size of the system image for Pine Phone is 740 MB. All applications and services are open under GPL and BSD licenses and are available on GitHub.
NemoMobile was originally planned as an open replacement for Nokia's Harmattan project and was developed in collaboration with the community and Jolla. However, over time, Jolla focused on the partially closed SailfishOS, neglecting the open part of the Mer project — NemoMobile. The last release of NemoMobile took place in April 2013.
In 2019, a team of enthusiasts began migrating the components of NemoMobile from the Mer base to the Manjaro base. Projects also emerged to port NemoMobile to other operating systems such as Fedora and OpenEmbedded. The main reason for the transition from the Mer base was the outdated components. In particular, Mer still uses Qt version 5.6 due to licensing restrictions.
Currently, the components of NemoMobile have been migrated to Qt 5.15 and other modern versions of packages. Missing applications have been added, including contacts, mail, browser, settings, weather, package manager, polkit agent, and authentication plugin.
The main unresolved issues right now are sending SMS (receiving works) and voice calls. Currently, images are available for PinePhone and PineTab, and images are under development for Google Pixel 3a and Volla Phone.
