The release of the EndeavourOS 21.4 'Atlantis' project has been announced, succeeding the Antergos distribution, which was discontinued in May 2019 due to a lack of free time for the remaining maintainers to support the project adequately. The installation image size is 1.9 GB (x86_64, a version for ARM is being developed separately).
Endeavour OS allows users to install Arch Linux with the required desktop environment without unnecessary complications, in the form as envisioned by the developers of the chosen desktop, without additional pre-installed programs. The distribution offers a simple installer for setting up the base Arch Linux environment with Xfce as the default desktop and the option to install one of the standard desktop environments from the repository, including Mate, LXQt, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma, GNOME, Budgie, as well as tiling window managers like i3, BSPWM, and Sway. Work is underway to add support for the Qtile and Openbox window managers, and the UKUI, LXDE, and Deepin desktop environments. Additionally, one of the project developers is working on a custom window manager, Worm.
In the new release:
- The Calamares installer has been updated to version 3.2.47. The ability to send logs in case of installation failure has been established. More detailed information about the currently installing packages is now displayed. The possibility of simultaneously installing Xfce and i3 has been restored. The proprietary NVIDIA driver installed by default now includes the nvidia-drm module, utilizing the DRM KMS (Direct Rendering Manager Kernel Modesetting) kernel subsystem. Btrfs file system compression using zstd is now in use.
- Updated software versions, including Linux kernel 5.15.5, Firefox 94.0.2, Mesa 21.2.5, nvidia-dkms 495.44.
- Additional checks have been added to prevent boot issues after updating NVIDIA drivers and the Linux kernel.
- A new button with information about the installed desktop environment has been added to the system login welcome screen.
- The eos-apps-info package has been added by default, expanding the range of programs for which information is available in the eos-apps-info-helper.
- An option to delete the cache of removed packages has been added to the paccache-service-manager.
- The interface for scheduling update checks has been improved in the eos-update-notifier.
- The installation of OS prober has been restored to improve functionality when multiple operating systems are installed.
- The ISO image provides the ability to define your own bash commands for execution after installation through the user_commands.bash file.
- The ISO image implements a 'hotfix' feature that allows for the distribution of fixes without updating the ISO image (the Welcome application checks for hotfixes and downloads them before launching the installer).
- The Sway window manager utilizes the ly DM display manager.
- Multimedia is enabled by default. server Pipewire.
