The EPEL project (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux), which maintains a repository of additional packages for RHEL and CentOS, has announced the creation of a repository variant for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9-beta and CentOS Stream 9 distributions. Binary builds are being made for x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x architectures.
At this stage of the repository's development, only a few additional packages supported by the Fedora Linux community are published. All proposed packages are related to the implementation of the iptables toolkit, support for which has been discontinued in RHEL 9 in favor of nftables.
It is important to note that previously the EPEL repository was formed after each significant RHEL release, but now, thanks to the emergence of CentOS Stream 9, EPEL 9 is launched approximately 5 months before the RHEL 9 release. This explains the small number of proposed packages— as user requests and maintainer activity increase, the number of packages will gradually expand.
Before the release of RHEL 9, expected in May, EPEL 9 will be built based on CentOS Stream 9, after which it will be transitioned to a build for RHEL 9. Separately, the EPEL Next repository is being formed based on CentOS Stream 8, while EPEL 8 continues to be built for RHEL 8 and can be utilized in distributions that have continued the development of traditional CentOS 8.x.
