Steinar H. Gunderson, one of the authors of the Snappy compression library and a participant in the development of IPv6, has announced his return to Google, where he previously worked on image search services and offline maps, but will now be involved in the development of the Chrome browser. Prior to this, Steinar spent five years at Oracle modernizing the optimizer for the MySQL DBMS. Steinar's note is noteworthy for its critical stance on the prospects of MySQL and the recommendation to switch to PostgreSQL.
According to Steinar, MySQL is significantly outdated and inefficient, while most users and developers believe that everything is fine, without taking the trouble to compare it with other DBMSs that have advanced significantly. The optimizations implemented for MySQL 8.x have noticeably improved the performance of the query optimizer compared to MySQL 5.7, but overall, the work is evaluated as merely bringing it to the level of technologies from the early 2000s. Oracle does not allocate the necessary resources for further improving MySQL to an acceptable state, which hampers its maintenance as a competitive product. The situation with the MariaDB DBMS is no better, especially after the departure of Michael 'Monty' Widenius's team, which was dissatisfied with the new trends in project management.
