The Siduction project release 2021.3 has been formed, developing a desktop-oriented Linux distribution built on the Debian Sid (unstable) package base. Siduction is a fork of Aptosid, which separated in July 2011. A key distinction from Aptosid was the use of a newer version of KDE from the experimental Qt-KDE repository as the user environment. Builds based on KDE (2.9 GB), Xfce (2.5 GB), and LXQt (2.5 GB) are offered for download, along with a minimalist 'Xorg' build based on the Fluxbox window manager (2 GB) and a 'noX' build (983 MB), provided without a graphical environment, intended for users who wish to assemble their own system. To enter the live session, use the login/password — 'siducer/live'.
Key Changes:
- Due to a lack of time, the developers have stopped creating builds with the Cinnamon, LXDE, and MATE desktops. The main focus is now on the KDE, LXQt, Xfce, Xorg, and noX builds.
- The package base has been synchronized with the Debian Unstable repository as of December 23. The Linux kernel version 5.15.11 and systemd 249.7 have been updated. The offered desktops include KDE Plasma 5.23.4, LXQt 1.0, and Xfce 4.16.
- Builds with all desktop environments for connecting to wireless networks have by default now switched to using the iwd daemon instead of wpa_supplicant. Iwd can be used either standalone or in conjunction with NetworkManager, systemd-networkd, and Connman. An option to return to wpa_supplicant is provided.
- In addition to sudo for executing commands on behalf of another user, the base includes the doas utility developed by the OpenBSD project. The new version adds input autocompletion files for bash to doas.
- In line with the changes in Debian Sid, the distribution has switched to using multimedia server PipeWire instead of PulseAudio and Jack.
- The ncdu package has been replaced with a faster alternative, gdu.
- A clipboard manager, CopyQ, has been included.
- The Digikam photo collection management program has been removed from the supply. The reason stated is the package size being too large — 130 MB.
